Marigold (Genda) is the cheerful, no-fuss flower behind almost every festival, wedding and garland in Pakistan. Its rounded pompom blooms in warm yellow, gold and deep orange bring instant colour to beds, borders, pots and rooftop containers — and the very same flowers are strung into the haar used at weddings and celebrations. It is one of the easiest flowers to grow: give it full sun, water when the topsoil dries out, and pinch off the faded blooms to keep new buds coming for weeks. In Lahore it flowers best through the cooler months, from autumn into spring, and as a bonus it helps keep pests away from nearby vegetables.
