About this plant

Bougainvillea (locally kaghazi phool, the “paper flower”) is one of the most spectacular flowering shrubs for Lahore — hardy and thorny, erupting in dense clusters of bright pink papery bracts. This compact plant in a 12-inch pot is an easy, affordable way to bring vivid colour to a balcony, small terrace, windowsill or gate. The one secret is sun: give it the hottest, brightest spot (five to six hours a day) and keep it on the dry side, or you get leaves but few flowers. Drought-tolerant once established, it trains up a support or shapes into a shrub — just mind the sharp thorns around children and pets.
