About this plant

The Chinaberry Tree (Melia azedarach), known locally as Bakain, is a fast-growing deciduous shade tree with dark green, twice-divided leaflets that give it a soft, fern-like canopy. In spring it carries fragrant lilac-purple blossoms, followed by round yellow berries that hang on into winter. Loved across Punjab for its dense shade and useful timber, it thrives in full sun and takes to almost any soil. Note: the berries and leaves are mildly toxic if eaten, so keep them away from young children and pets.
