The areca palm (Dypsis lutescens) is one of the easiest ways to bring a soft, tropical green indoors — its arching, feathery fronds instantly make a corner feel calmer and more alive. It is a favourite for Pakistani drawing rooms, offices and shaded patios because it stays lush without demanding much, and good palm tree care here really comes down to getting light, water and humidity right. Here is how to keep yours thriving in a Lahore home.

Light — bright, but not harsh

The areca palm loves bright, indirect light. A spot a few feet back from a sunny window, or a well-lit lounge corner, is ideal. What it does not enjoy is fierce, direct afternoon sun through glass — in a Lahore summer that will scorch the fronds and leave them dry and brown at the tips. Too little light, on the other hand, makes the plant thin and leggy. If you keep it on a covered veranda or patio, morning sun with afternoon shade suits it beautifully.

Watering — moist, never soggy

Keep the soil lightly and evenly moist through the warm months, letting the top inch dry before you water again. In peak summer a potted areca may want water every two to three days; in winter, when growth slows, cut back so the roots never sit wet. The two most common ways to kill an areca are overwatering — which rots the roots and yellows the whole plant — and letting it bone-dry, which browns the tips. Always use a pot with drainage holes and empty the saucer.

Humidity and our dry air

This is a humidity-loving palm, and Lahore's air — especially indoors with fans or AC running — can get very dry. Dry air is the usual reason for crispy brown frond tips. A few easy fixes:

  • Mist the leaves every couple of days in the driest months.
  • Group it with other plants, or stand the pot on a tray of pebbles and water.
  • Keep it away from the direct blast of an air conditioner or heater.

Soil, feeding and repotting

Use a light, well-draining mix — good potting soil with some sand or perlite so water runs through freely. Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser roughly once a month through spring and summer, and stop in winter. Arecas actually like being a little snug in their pot, so repot only every two to three years, moving up just one pot size. Wipe the fronds with a damp cloth now and then to clear dust and keep them breathing and glossy.

Watch for pests

Indoors, spider mites and mealybugs are the main troublemakers, especially when the air is dry. Check the underside of the fronds for fine webbing or white cottony spots, wipe them off, and give the plant a gentle shower. Regular misting keeps mites away in the first place.
