Everyone kills a plant or two when they start out — it is part of learning. The trick is to begin with plants that forgive your mistakes. These six are the toughest, most rewarding indoor plants for beginners we know, and every one of them thrives in a Pakistani home with very little fuss.
1. Snake plant
If you buy one plant, make it this. The snake plant handles low light, needs water only every two to three weeks, and shrugs off heat. It is architectural, hard to kill, and even releases a little oxygen at night — a favourite for bedrooms.
2. Money plant (pothos)
Nearly unkillable and endlessly generous. It grows in water or soil, in bright light or a dim corner, and every cutting becomes a new plant. Trails beautifully from a shelf. See our full money plant care guide.
3. ZZ plant
The plant for the forgetful. Glossy, deep-green leaves, thrives on neglect, tolerates low light, and stores water in its roots so it barely minds a missed watering. Almost bulletproof.
4. Spider plant
Cheerful, fast-growing and safe around pets and children. It sends out baby "pups" you can pot up and share, so one plant quickly becomes many. Happy in bright, indirect light.
5. Peace lily
The one with elegant white flowers — and it droops dramatically when thirsty, so it tells you exactly when to water. Happy in low light. Read our peace lily care guide.
6. Jade plant
A chubby little succulent said to bring good luck. It wants a bright spot and very little water, lives for years, and is one of the easiest plants to keep alive on a windowsill.
Three rules for beginners
- Underwater rather than overwater. More beginner plants die from too much water than too little.
- Use pots with drainage holes. A pretty pot with no hole drowns roots.
- Match the plant to your light. Honestly assess how bright the spot is, and pick accordingly.
Common questions
What is the easiest indoor plant to keep alive?
The snake plant. It tolerates low light, infrequent watering and heat better than almost anything else.
Which indoor plants are safe for pets?
Spider plant is a great non-toxic choice. Keep snake plant, pothos and peace lily out of reach, as they can irritate if chewed.
How many plants should a beginner start with?
Two or three. Learn their rhythm, enjoy the wins, and add more once you are confident.
