The Ficus (Ficus microcarpa), commonly called the Indian Laurel Fig or Chinese Banyan, is one of the most versatile ornamental plants you can own — neat, glossy, deep-green leaves on a handsome branching shape that suits a potted feature, a garden hedge or bonsai. It is easy to grow: give it bright light (full sun to light shade) and keep the soil evenly moist. Fast-growing and forgiving of pruning, it shapes well as a shrub, hedge, tree or bonsai. One caution: the milky sap can irritate skin and the leaves are mildly toxic to pets if chewed, so keep it out of reach.
