Grow your own grapes with this Grape Vine (Vitis vinifera) — the classic angoor that does so well in Punjab's hot summers. A vigorous deciduous climber, it puts out fresh green, lobed leaves each spring and, once mature, hangs with bunches of sweet fruit. Plant it in a large pot or in the ground against a sturdy trellis or wire in full sun (the more sun, the sweeter the grapes), water consistently, and keep the soil free-draining. Prune it each winter while it is bare and dormant to keep it productive. Tip: let a young vine build strength for its first few years before you allow it to fruit — patience is rewarded with better grapes.
