Sanchezia (Sanchezia speciosa) is a bold foliage plant with glossy, deep-green leaves traced in bright yellow veins, held on purple-red stems — it looks almost hand-painted and lights up a shaded verandah, a bright room or a covered balcony. In late summer it can also send up spikes of red bracts with tubular yellow flowers. Give it bright, filtered light or gentle morning sun; in Lahore, keep it out of the harsh afternoon sun, which scorches the leaf edges brown. Keep the soil lightly moist in summer, let the top inch dry out between waterings in winter, and mist the leaves when the air is dry. Move it somewhere sheltered on cold December–January nights, and pinch the growing tips to keep it bushy.
